Nicole broke up with Matt months ago and is now engaged to someone else. He’s very good-looking and has no trouble finding other lovers, but that doesn’t help because he’s still obsessed with wanting her back. Then he gets the inspiration that swearing off sex for Lent (all forms of sexual activity, even kissing or masturbation) will give him the perspective he needs. So of course a few days later he meets a woman and they fall in love. Now Matt sees his vow as a personal matter, and won’t even tell her about it, but his friends think otherwise, and now the complications begin…

Monty Brogan is about to start his last day of freedom before turning himself into the authorities and serving a seven-year term for drug dealing. He’s a charming young man who had always dreamed of being a fireman, following in the working-class footsteps of his father, who has had to put up his bar in Queens as bond so that his son can stay out of jail until his sentence begins. Monty, named for Montgomery Clift, does not know how he managed to get himself into this predicament. It was easy money and it carried so many perks, and you’ll feel more than a little sympathy for this young man who has managed to kill his own dream for courtside seats at Madison Square Garden. But before he goes to prison, Monty wants to have one last night out on the town with his two best friends. Frank Slattery is a bond trader, one of the best and most successful risk takers in a very risky business. The other is Jakob Elinsky, an English teacher who envies his friends’ lifestyles but who has no intention of ever giving up his job for the easy money, despite the disillusionment of teaching high school students in a tough school. The three young men enjoy the night into the early morning as they eat, drink, and visit the hottest spots in town. It’s a sad night for Monty, but he has a plan that neither Frank nor Jacob know about–and it makes for a shocking ending to this brilliant and disturbing story.

I Can Do Bad All by Myself (2002)
Posted by admin under Year 2002

Madea’s family comes to see her while she’s sick, however it’s the rest of the family that needs help. Her granddaughter Maylee has dumped her daughter, Keisha off on her sister, Vianne, who has been living with Madea for the past 6 months since her divorce. Chaos erupts when Maylee shows up engaged to Vianne’s ex, Anthony, who is out to make Vy as miserable as possible. Vy meanwhile starts to get interested in Bobby, who works for Madea and who’s served time, who during the past 6 months has insisted that he’s no good. Elsewhere, Madea and her daughter, Cora try to convince Maylee that Keisha needs a mother to stick around with her, but that doesn’t tie in with Anthony’s plans. Madea’s stuck with all her family’s problems and a few of her own, such as Brown coming over repeatedly and getting the whole household in an uproar, and the police chasing her. Through it all, they prove that no amount of money, nor material items nor empty relationship can offer near what God, family, and love can.

Rose Red (2002)
Posted by admin under Year 2002

Dr. Joyce Reardon, a psychology professor, leads a team of psychics into the decrepit mansion known as Rose Red. Her efforts unleash the spirit of former owner Ellen Rimbauer and uncover the horrifying secrets of those who lived and died there.
For the rest of you, though, this mammoth 250 minutes horror miniseries, is well worth the time. Stephen King has probably created one of his best screenplay-to-screen only works (not based on a novel) in “Rose Red”, a chore usually not too successful (”Sleepwalkers”, anyone?). This haunted house tale, about a creepy enormous mansion in Seatle, and the intrepid psychics that go there for a “field trip”, boasts amazing production design and sets, fine acting, especially by Nancy Travis as the determined Joyce Reardon and Matt Ross as Emery (”Go and warn someone who isn’t broke!), and decent special effects (especially considering this is made for TV). Although not everything is always clear, and although the middle part tends to sag a little, this is a high quality mini-series which amazingly manages to sustain interest through four hours of haunted house shenanigans, one of the most overused themes in horror. It’s length also allows it to dedicate the first hour to character development and story buildup, so that when the characters walk for the first time into “Rose Red”, we are almost as anxious as they are. this wouldn’t have worked in a two hour film.
