To End All Wars (2001)
Posted by admin under Year 2001

To End All Wars is a remarkably bold–almost brazen–film that deserves a wider distribution. As far as war movies go, it is much better than Thin Red Line, which tries to be thoughtful but only achieves a meaningless ambivalence. To End All Wars conveys its message in a clear yet profound way.

Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
Posted by admin under Year 2004

In this film, muckraker Michael Moore turns his eye on George W. Bush and his War on Terrorism agenda. He illustrates his argument about how this failed businessman with deep connections to the royal house of Saud of Saudia Arabia and the Bin Ladins got elected on fraudulent circumstances and proceeded to blunder through his duties while ignoring warnings of the looming betrayal by his foreign partners. When that treachery hits with the 9/11 attacks, Moore explains how Bush failed to take immediate action to defend his nation, only to later cynically manipulate it to serve his wealthy backers’ corrupt ambitions. Through facts, footage and interviews, Moore illustrates his contention of how Bush and his cronies have gotten America into worse trouble than ever before and why Americans should not stand for it.

Just Like Heaven (2005)
Posted by admin under Year 2005

David (Mark Ruffalo, Collateral, You Can Count On Me) finds an amazing apartment in San Francisco–only to discover it’s haunted by the spirit of the previous tenant, an overachieving doctor named Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde, Election). There’s something not quite right about Elizabeth’s afterlife; against his better judgement, David agrees to help her investigate her life…but finds himself digging into his own as well. The plot takes a twist that some viewers will see coming, but Just Like Heaven doesn’t rely on the surprise alone; the revelation takes the story in a new and just as entertaining direction. Witherspoon and Ruffalo are two of the best romantic leads around, but the surprise is how well their contrasting flavors (perky and moody, respectively) mesh, creating a sparky, engaging chemistry. Also featuring Dina Waters (Freaky Friday), Donal Logue (The Tao of Steve), Ben Shenkman (Angels in America), and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite). Crisply directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls), who carefully keeps the supernatural from getting silly and the romance from getting gooey.

The Quick and the Dead (1995)
Posted by admin under Year 1995

The Quick and the Dead follows the course of a single elimination gunfighting contest held by John Herod (Hackman), a former outlaw and murderer who rules the small town of Redemption, Arizona, with an iron fist. Herod sponsors the contest with one goal in mind - to eliminate anyone who might pose a threat to him. The contest attracts a variety of contestants, including several outlaws, an adventurer (David), a Swedish gunfighting champion (Sven-Ole Thorsen), a trick shooter and braggart (Henriksen), Herod’s alleged son (DiCaprio), and a mysterious woman (Stone) bent on killing Herod. It is revealed through a series of flashbacks that Stone’s character is no crusader or savior; her mission is one of personal vengeance. As a young girl, Herod manipulated her into killing her father (Gary Sinise), the town’s marshal. Herod also sends his henchmen to retrieve a man named Cort (Crowe), a fellow outlaw retired to life as a missionary. Cort is publicly tortured and humiliated when he refuses to recant his mission of non-violence, and is ultimately forced into the contest. He and “the Lady” (Stone) find they have a common enemy in Herod and devise a plan to kill him and free the town from his oppression.

The Devils Advocate (1997)
Posted by admin under Year 1997

Devil’s Advocate thematically raises the preposition that ‘is winning everything’ in the legal profession.Does a lawyer commits the basic sin of Vanity if he believes his job is to win, as Kevin does. Further the movie in John Milton’s trenchant speech questions the very notion of righteousness in the post-modern world. Milton’s speech rips apart the whole discourse of religion when he presents the inherent contradiction of it. Kevin’s dilemma reflects the modern man who accuses the circumstances for being what he is,the culture dominated by making money ‘which build egos of the size of cathedral’, the question is can one really call what one does ‘freely-willed’?. The movie deals with these ‘Hamltian questions’ in a lawyer’s mind.
