Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003)

Intrepid British archaeologist Lara Croft has made perhaps the most important archaeological discovery in history: an orb that leads to the mythical Pandora’s Box. Unfortunately, the orb falls into the hands of Jonathan Reiss, an evil scientist who deals in killer viruses and hopes to sell the secrets of the box as the ultimate weapon. Recruited by British Intelligence to get the orb back from Reiss, Lara recruits Terry Sheridan, a British marine turned mercenary (and her former love interest) to help. Jenna Rink is an ultra-adorable naive 13-year old who envies the ‘cool’ popular girls at school and would do absolutely ANYTHING to be accepted in that group. Her best friend and ardent adorer, Matt, is (in her mind) part and parcel of her uncool persona and (we’re led to believe)is an associate she’s quite willing to lose in order to gain admiration from the cool set. Before she has occasion to actually dump him, however, a bit of ‘magic’(initiated by her heart of heart wish) relocates Jenna into adulthood. She wakes up to find she’s thirty, beautiful, a successful magazine editor at her fav publication, and has a hockey-player celebrity boyfriend and (seemingly) all she ever wished for. Of course, as it so often does, life has thrown Jenna some serious curves and dealt her some cards she didn’t count on or particularly want. She’s become sneaky, selfish, and has virtually rejected her family and the friend (Matt) who meant the most to her in exchange for her ‘wishes come true’. As her 13-year-old mentality recognizes her adult ‘profits and losses’ she is heartbroken and wants only to return to her early teen innocence. And of course, as must be the case in truly ‘feel good’ movies, she gets her opportunity to make things right. This film is a real heart-warmer, especially for all those who remember the awkward teenage years as well as for all of us who have made poor choices along the way which we wish we could change. Just watching Jenna make good use of that opportunity makes us feel better, allowing us to realize how great it would feel.

The History Boys (2006)

When a 1980s class achieves the best scores ever at Cutlers’ Grammar School for boys in Sheffield (Yorkshire, northern England), the petty headmaster, who craves the prestige like the parents, recruits a young Oxford graduate, Irwin, to prepare them for the general entry exams for the world class universities of Oxford and Cambridge. He stresses that takes not just delivering what all schools prepare for, but -if they even really want to go- standing out by a different approach and perspective: surprising quotations and associations, the other side of the coin, witty phrasing… Actually good foundations were laid by the current staff, less by history teacher Dorothy Lintott, a frustrated liberal feminist without actual impact, then by the enthusiasm-arousing ‘Hector’ in General Studies, who gets their attention and makes them think trough literature, open discussion, role-play and performing declamation and song, at both of which the only Jewish (like the Muslim, fully integrated) boy, sensitive gentle gay David, excels. Alas, when the headmaster learns that the caring, paternal Hector once innocently touched a boy’s privates, he insists on ‘graceful’ early retirement, a personal drama with surprising twists in the end. Meanwhile the irresistible class flirt, Dakin, skilfully tests all borders including his and Irwin’s sexual orientation, and all consider what they really aspire and care for, in studies and life.

Serenity (2005)

The crew of the Serenity is getting desperate. They have lain lower and lower to protect their doctor, Simon Tam, and his telepathic traumatized little sister, River, from the alliance, whom he rescued her from a year earlier. This has made getting jobs harder and now they are desperate. When they take River on a robbery during which Reavers (humans who have gone crazy and turned into cannibals) attack, Simon decides that its time to leave the crew of the Serenity for his and River’s safety. She then mutters “Miranda” and goes berserk and nearly shoots Capt. Malcolm Reynolds, until her brother says the safety word to put her to sleep. Reynolds decides to take them back on board for safety, only now an alliance operative is on their tracks and making Reynolds determined to find out what “Miranda” is and what the Alliance is hiding.

Marcus Burnett is a hen-pecked family man. Mike Lowrey is more of a loose cannon. They are partners on the Miami Police Department, and they are about to take on a highly dangerous case. 100 million dollars in heroin, from the biggest drug bust of their careers, is stolen from police headquarters. Now, they have 72 hours to reclaim the heroin before the Internal Affairs Division gets involved. This puts Mike and Marcus hot on the trail of a French drug kingpin named Fouchet. Mike asks Maxine Logan, a hooker he knows, to keep an eye open for high rollers. Later, she gets a call from a guy who’s high on drugs and wants to spend $2000. Maxine asks her best friend Julie Mott to tag along with her to the home of former cop Eddie Dominguez. Julie is not a hooker but the guy’s so out of it that they’ll be out of there with the money in just minutes. But at Dominguez’s house, Fouchet kills Maxine. Julie witnessed the murder, so she contacts the police. But Julie, who doesn’t know what Mike looks like, is willing to talk only to Mike. Mike is not around, so Marcus is forced to pretend to be Mike, and when Mike returns, he’s forced to pretend to be Marcus. Marcus is a family man who has a wife named Theresa and three kids named James, Megan, and Quincy, while Mike is not, so this is not a very close fit. Mike and Marcus’s pursuit of Fouchet kicks into overdrive when Fouchet’s henchmen kidnap Julie right out from under their noses.

Circa 460 A.D. Mira was born in a warrior-family in Kerala, India, was well versed in martial arts and self-defense, so much so that she was recruited by the Spanish royalty and re-located to Constantinople. From there she was instructed to assist Roman Commander Aurelius to plan the escape of 12-year old Romulus Augustus Caesar from a prison in Capri after his parents had been killed by the leader of the Alliance in turmoil-stricken Rome that has seen the deaths of five emperors in five years. Mira, Aurelius, and a Priest, Ambrosinius, along with a handful of loyal soldiers were successful in the escape plan and deliver Romulus to Roman Senator Nestor. What the crew do not realize is that their task is not over yet, for Nestor is all set to betray Romulus, leaving them with no alternative but to flee to Britannia, where they will be forced to confront a seemingly invincible Vortygn, whose main aim is to obtain a powerful sword that was meant for defense and defeat, and also ensure the death of Romulus at any and all costs.
