Rose Red (2002)
Posted by admin under Year 2002

Dr. Joyce Reardon, a psychology professor, leads a team of psychics into the decrepit mansion known as Rose Red. Her efforts unleash the spirit of former owner Ellen Rimbauer and uncover the horrifying secrets of those who lived and died there.
For the rest of you, though, this mammoth 250 minutes horror miniseries, is well worth the time. Stephen King has probably created one of his best screenplay-to-screen only works (not based on a novel) in “Rose Red”, a chore usually not too successful (”Sleepwalkers”, anyone?). This haunted house tale, about a creepy enormous mansion in Seatle, and the intrepid psychics that go there for a “field trip”, boasts amazing production design and sets, fine acting, especially by Nancy Travis as the determined Joyce Reardon and Matt Ross as Emery (”Go and warn someone who isn’t broke!), and decent special effects (especially considering this is made for TV). Although not everything is always clear, and although the middle part tends to sag a little, this is a high quality mini-series which amazingly manages to sustain interest through four hours of haunted house shenanigans, one of the most overused themes in horror. It’s length also allows it to dedicate the first hour to character development and story buildup, so that when the characters walk for the first time into “Rose Red”, we are almost as anxious as they are. this wouldn’t have worked in a two hour film.

Over Her Dead Body (2008)
Posted by admin under Year 2008

Over Her Dead Body is an alright movie, not sure if it’s worth the money, but I’d give it a rental for you if you want to see it or are curious. Eva Longoria just doesn’t have enough star power to make the film work, no offense to those who love her, she just belongs on the small screen over the silver screen. Not to mention the character of Ashley, she seems still not too likable with everything she pulls, or her “gay” friend, Dan, just again, not really likable. Just with some re-writing and proper attention, this film could have been better, but instead we get the average predictable romantic comedy that will leave with with an empty feeling.

Young, beautiful, and intelligent Maya lives with her father in a palatial mansion in rural India. When her father suffers a stroke, she calls for the local Dr. Charu Das, who arrives on his bicycle and prescribes treatment for her dad. He comes often, more on the pretext of seeing her, than her dad, and eventually both get married. Years pass by, and Charu is busy engrossed in treating patients, leaving Maya alone to ponder her own fate and life. And it is not long before a young man named Rudra enters her life, and an affair follows. This affair does not last long, as a much younger man, Lalit, now enters Maya’s life, and thence begins another passionate affair. But again, Maya is not satiated. She longs for more than bodily needs, and it is perhaps this that leads to her sudden death, leaving two investigators to probe who or what really killed Maya.

American Crude (2007)
Posted by admin under Year 2007

American Crude is a multi-layered film that follows the lives of several different, seemingly unrelated characters whose lives all intertwine one evening as a result of the schemes orchestrated by one man named Johnny (Ron Livingston, Office Space, The Music Within). It was supposed to be a fun and carefree evening, one last hurrah for a pair of friends who are engaged to be married, Bill (Rob Schneider, Deuce Bigalow Male Gigolo, The Benchwarmers) and Olivia (Amanda Detmer, Saving Silverman, You, Me and Dupree). Johnny has ulterior motives, however, as he slowly hatches his plan to split up the happy couple in order to profess his love for Olivia. While the night progresses, Johnny leads Bill astray, getting him drunk and high, and arranging for him to mistakenly hire a transsexual prostitute, Gigi (Missi Pyle, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story). Things really get out of control when Bill winds up dead in Gigi’s apartment.
